When you watch a sports shonen-type anime like Captain Tsubasa, Kuroko no Basket or Haikyu!!, you quickly realize that the atmosphere can be immature against a backdrop of fraternity. But Blue Lock, whose animated adaptation is scheduled for this fall, is a far cry from this cliché.

Created by the design duo NOMURA Yûsuke and the screenplay KANESHIRO Muneyuki, Blue Lock takes on the world of football with an unprecedented perspective. Indeed, far from the cliché of sports manga that bet on team spirit, Blue Lock is a battle royale whose objective is simple: to find and train the one who will be the ultimate attacker of the national team of Japan.

The beginnings of Blue Lock

It was in 2018 that the manga debuted in publisher Kodansha’s preprint Weekly Shonen Magazine. Its first volume is quickly published, since it will not have taken more than a month of serialization to see it appear in Japanese bookstores. However, it is only in 2021 that Blue Lock officially appears abroad, both in France and in the United States.

The same year, the series won the 45th Kodansha Manga Award in the shonen category, proof of the quality of the title. In the process, the Japanese animation studio 8-Bit (Me, when I reincarnated as Slime or Knight’s & Magic) announces that it is working on the animated adaptation of Blue Lock.

The anime should be broadcast at the end of the year, right for the Football World Cup which will take place in Qatar.

What Blue Lock is talking about?

Blue Lock follows the story of Yoishi Isagi, a young high school student who attacks at his high school soccer club. The latter is part of a selection of young players chosen to participate in a new training program for the Japanese national team: the Blue Lock.

Isagi receives the invitation at a moment of great questioning since his team has just been eliminated from the national championships. Elimination which he considers to be his fault, because instead of attempting the last goal, he preferred to pass to a teammate.

Although he will hesitate to participate in the Blue Lock, the speech of Jinpachi Ego, the man behind the creation of the Blue Lock, will galvanize Isagi, who will decide to participate in this training camp. What Isagi doesn’t know yet is that the Blue Lock isn’t just a training camp.

Indeed, the Blue Lock has a very specific objective: to create a striker capable of leading the Japanese national team to victory at the World Cup. This desire to create the ultimate striker was born following the elimination of the Japanese team during the 2018 World Cup. And it is in order to achieve that Jinpachi Ego is recruited.

He will then create the Blue Lock program which will consist in pushing the selected ones to the maximum so as to see them deploy all the possible resources. Young players will be completely isolated from the outside world for the duration of Blue Lock so that they can only think of one thing: playing football.

How is Blue Lock different from other sports anime?

Unlike many sports anime, Blue Lock departs dramatically from the traditional narrative where teamwork is at the center of the story, although the central theme is a traditionally team-based sport. As said before, the manga is more like a battle royale and finds itself at the antipodes of other titles like Haikyuu!! or Kuroko no Basket.

By putting a character like Jinpachi Ego in charge of the Blue Lock, who will impose a rather unique vision of things, the young athletes will have no choice but to compete against each other in order to develop their skills. We therefore find ourselves in a story with codes similar to Alice In Borderland where only survival counts.

Although the story does not cause the characters to physically die, players find themselves in a similar state. Once eliminated, the player who leaves Blue Lock no longer has the right to play professional football for the rest of his life. His sports career is simply over.

Despite the fact that Blue Lock is a manga about football, it totally breaks the clichés and mainly focuses on the individuality and selfishness of athletes, especially at a high level. These many points in common with the famous Battle Royale and its atypical side make its animated adaptation one of the most anticipated for 2022. And depending on the result, the 8-bit studio could well gain popularity in the eyes of the world.
